The Doctor is the player character in Arknights and serves as a central protagonist in the Main Theme, playing a crucial role in the story alongside Amiya.
At first, you can't feel anything. Things gradually start to feel familiar...
But in the end, you can't remember anything important.[3]
Background[edit]
The Doctor of Rhodes Island remains enigmatic and elusive to most, but they are widely recognized as the organization’s chief strategist and field commander. Before joining Rhodes Island, the Doctor possessed extensive expertise in fields such as neurology, Originium research, and Catastrophe prediction—skills that have proven invaluable throughout Terra’s many crises.[4][5]
Previously, the Doctor worked alongside Kal'tsit and Theresa as a core member of Babel, a militant organization dedicated to improving the lives of the Sarkaz. Despite their strategic brilliance, the Doctor was known among Babel’s members for their empathy and resolve. Elite Operator Scout once remarked that even under immense pressure, the Doctor’s gaze remained fixed on victory, while Ines likened them to a chess player moving among wooden pieces.[6][7]
During this time, the Doctor also acted as a guardian to a young Amiya, raising her with care and guidance. In the present, Amiya continues to regard them with deep affection and respect, seeing them as more than just a leader of Rhodes Island. Operators like Ace, Scout, and Logos have also recalled warm, casual conversations with the Doctor, revealing a humorous and approachable side.[8]
Following a catastrophic event that led to Babel’s collapse, the Doctor was placed into stasis within a Sarcophagus beneath Chernobog, where they remained in suspended animation for three years.[9] They were eventually awakened by Amiya at the outset of the Chernobog Crisis, with no memory of their former life. This moment marked the beginning of Rhodes Island's current journey.
Today, the Doctor leads Rhodes Island’s medical and paramilitary operations, coordinating field missions, studying Oripathy, and training Operators. Though physically frail and a non-combatant,[10] their tactical genius makes them indispensable. While often seen masked and hooded outside the landship, some Operators reference seeing their face directly, suggesting they unmask in private.
In the anime Arknights: Prelude to Dawn, the Doctor is depicted with snow-white hair, dark gray eyes, and an androgynous voice. Though lacking physical strength, their intelligence and empathy have earned the respect of countless Rhodes Island members.
According to Warfarin, the Doctor's blood has unusual properties, and Kal'tsit has used it in emergency medical treatments on Amiya.[11] Beyond battlefield strategy, the Doctor also handles internal affairs—building diplomatic and commercial ties with influential figures across Terra, including the ruling bodies of Kazimierz, the secretive Maylander Foundation in Columbia, and Enciodes Silverash of Kjerag. In their spare time, the Doctor mentors young Operators like Ifrit and Projekt Red, maintaining a guiding presence as an educator despite their amnesia.
Warning: Spoilers for Main Theme and the Babel event follow.
As the story of Arknights progresses, the Doctor is revealed to be the only known living Predecessor, a spacefaring humanoid race that arrived on Terra over 13,000 years ago. In their time, the Doctor was mainly known as Oracle, a codename from their research group.[12] As an accomplished scientist, they were central to multiple pivotal events in the far distant past. Together with their partner Priestess, the Doctor was involved in the creation of Originium as a means to ensure their civilization’s survival in the face of an existential threat from the Observers. They also played a part in the creation of AMa-10—later known as Kal'tsit—and contributed significantly to the fields of neurology and military tactics.
The Doctor boasts an extraordinary intellectual capability before and after their amnesia: in the past, they created an algorithm capable of precisely predicting Catastrophe movements[5], and were a leading mind in Oripathy research. However, these contributions are only one part of a much darker legacy.
During their time in the organization Babel, the Doctor served as a field commander, Oripathy researcher, and advisor to Theresa alongside Kal'tsit, working toward uplifting the Sarkaz and ending their systemic oppression. Despite showing great empathy—such as granting mercy to a confused attacker and supporting a loyal soldier who had erred[13][14]—the tormented Doctor, wracked with grief, ultimately made a devastating decision to continue what they call the Originium Project—the necessary assimilation of Terra for the sake of all life.[15]
In a secret arrangement with Theresis, the Doctor facilitated the assassination of Theresa, effectively initiating Babel's collapse. They disabled the landship’s defenses at a time when most of Babel's fighting force was away, allowing fanatical assassins to strike. However, the Doctor came face to face with the dying Theresa out of concern for Amiya. In Theresa's final moments, she used the last of her strength to erase the Doctor’s memories, with the intent of giving them a chance to live a new life.[16]
Following Babel’s fall, Kal'tsit placed the comatose Doctor in the Sarcophagus deep within Chernobog, where they remained for three years to recover from their physical and mental injuries. Upon their awakening at the start of the Main Theme, the Doctor had no recollection of their past decisions or identity.[5]
Some characters, such as Kal'tsit and W, still harbor deep resentment toward the Doctor for their role in Theresa's death. Nonetheless, honoring Theresa’s final wish, Kal'tsit continues to protect the Doctor and Amiya.
Spoilers for Main Theme and the Babel event ends here.

Notes[edit]
- ↑ The Doctor's name is assumed to be the player's nickname; the Arknights Terra Wiki will use "{nickname}" when referring to the Doctor's name in operation stories and interludes.
- ↑ The original Chinese text uses the pronoun "他" which can also be gender-neutral aside from its masculine nature, while the Japanese localization refers to the Doctor reflexively and never uses gendered terms, and the English localization uses the singular they whenever it arises. There are instances of the English localization using "he" in some occasions, but this can be assumed to be a mistranslation based on the Chinese pronoun; otherwise the use of singular they is consistent and deliberate.
- ↑ The Doctor's height sometimes appears to change depending on the in-game CG (from roughly 170cm to 195cm), however it is never acknowledged by the game itself. It can be believed to be a simply inconsistency from the result of different artist for different CGs.
