Frederick III of Victoria is a background NPC in Arknights. He is mentioned in various stories such as Phantom & Crimson Solitaire and Episode 11, and plays a key role in the history of the Victorian Empire.
Background[edit]
Frederick III, better known as the Conqueror of Gaul, was one of the previous Aslan Kings of Victoria and the son of the famed Elizabeth the Glorious.[1] Considered a skilled military strategist amongst other monarchs, he was responsible for reforming the old military system shortly after his coronation, regrouping all armed forces into a single, professional standing army that would respond directly to the king and the Parliament. "The Exemplars" served as the role model of Frederick's reforms.[2] During Frederick's reign, the crime rates in Victoria were rather low, and neither the Sarkaz or Taran natioalists were considered an issue.[3] Moreover, he hoped that the empire would never be engulfed into chaos again by the Draco nobility's actions.[4]
In the Terran year 1016, Gaul would invade the Victorian borders while at the same time aiding Victoria's westward enclave, Columbia. Due to the constant pressure from the Gaulish forces and the disastrous defeat that the Duke of Tybalt suffered during the Battle of Babbage two years later, Frederick had no option but to retreat all stationed soldiers from Columbia.[5][6] In fact, the Victorian-Gaulish diplomatic relationships began to deteriorate afterwards, and skirmishes in the borders have become usual.[7] In 1029, Herkunftshorn the Witch King declared war to Corsica I, who ascended to the throne after Columbia's independence, in response to his intentions to turn Leithanien into a vassal state, and the Parliament discussed the possibility of whether they should interfere or not. After a year of spectating Gaul's actions, Frederick finally decided to interfere in the conflict, hoping that his leadership and actions would "sweep the shadows from Victoria's future."[8]
Alongside a joint alliance between the Witch King and Tsar Ivan Yevyengenich of Ursus, Frederick III led the Victorian forces in the Battle of the Four Emperors, which culminated in the defeat and disbandment of the Gaulish Empire in 1031, and the destruction of Lingones in a single night. With the once "Capital of the World" erased from the map, Victoria obtanined a large amount of resources, technologies and heritage from the Basse-Gaule region. Thus, Frederick III managed to establish Victoria into an influential empire through battle, leading the path to the "Victorian Era."[8][9] In that same year, to celebrate Victoria's triumph and Frederick III's birthday, a huge military parade was held in Londinium, with dozens of Steam Knights marching down the steps of the Palace of Westhaleg.[10] However, on his way back to the capital after a ceremony to honor the troops who returned from the Battle of the Four Emperors, a group of Gaulish remnants attempted to assassinate Frederick, but were caught in the act by the then Knight of the Tower Sir Layton Montague, who managed to protect him, albeit getting injured in the process.[11]
Frederick was later succeded by his son Alistair II, who would reign the empire until the fall of the Draco bloodline and the popular uprising that overthrew the Aslan House in 1072.[12]
