Aulus
- Church of the Deep
- Sanctilaminium Ambrosii (formerly)
Aulus is an NPC in Arknights. He is first implicitly mentioned in stories such as Mizuki & Caerula Arbor before making an appearance in Hortus de Escapismo and Exodus from the Pale Sea.
Background[edit]
Aulus is a gentle-looking bishop from the Church of the Deep and an Aegir alchemist, renowned for his expertise in both alchemy and the Iberian swordsmanship discipline known as Destreza. He once studied at the Sanctilaminium Ambrosii and joined the clergy, later leaving to work as a teacher at an ancient, long-forgotten Iberian alchemy school that was eventually disbanded following the Profound Silence. In fact, he was also considered the most talented alchemist of said school.[1][2][3]
Aulus also served as Thorns's childhood mentor. After he was rendered homeless following the death of his parents, Aulus taught him tricks to attract the attention of passersby to earn money—something Thorns only later realized was alchemy. Aulus eventually took Thorns as his disciple, also teaching him Destreza. Not only Thorns did learn a lot useful skills from Aulus, but he also inherited his swordsmanship and mannerisms.[1][4][5]He suddenly disappeared one day, leaving Thorns confused. Aulus left behind a gold coin, signifying Thorns as his successor in the art of alchemy.
Story[edit]
Hortus de Escapismo[edit]
Aulus accidentally encountered Arturia after her conversation with Erendel and Estara. She referred to him as "Bishop", despite the fact he was never formally canonized in the Lateran clergy. His presence alone raised her wariness, prompting him to clarify the reason for his appearance.[6]
He is later seen speaking with Bishop Stefano about Stefano's supposed crisis of faith, which the Stefano himself denies. Aulus attempted to persuade Stefano to join him, but Stefano did not respond.[7] When Lemuen discovered the mutated Hyman wandering around the monastery at night, Aulus intercepted her. Although his words sounded sincere, Lemuen rejected him, stating she cannot trust him. Aulus remarked that she was as stubborn as his former disciple. Lemuen stood up, having enough of his chattering, declaring she had heard enough and would "expel" him from the monastery.[8]
At some unspecified point during the event, Aulus left the monastery along with Hyman.[9] Later, Bishop Stefano confessed to Oren Argiolas that Aulus had given him Seaborn flesh, which he had personally mixed with the communion bread. However, when Spuria and Lemuen investigated the repository, they found it empty. Spuria recalled that there was one other person she had seen entering the repository. Clément, under the influence of Arturia's Arts, admitted to taking the "contaminated communion" and consuming it. However, due to his weak physical constitution and deteriorating condition, he did not mutate into a Seaborn.[10]

While Aulus does not directly appear in the event, he features prominently in Thorns' flashbacks. He is shown to have taken an interest in Thorns after teaching him some "simple tricks" to attract passersby.[11] Later, Aulus accepted Thorns as his disciple, instructing him in alchemy and the Destreza swordsmanship. Before his sudden disappearance, Aulus gave Thorns a gold coin—a symbol of recognition that signifies an alchemist's acknowledgment of their successor. Juana later explained that gold coins are only given to disciples whose skills have been formally acknowledged as worthy.[12][13]
