Wherever the artillery fire strikes, it is Ursus' territory; Wherever my scimitar strikes, it is Ursus' enemy.
—Vladimir Ivanovich[1]

Emperor Vladimir Ivanovich of Ursus is an NPC in Arknights. He is a background character who plays an important role in the history of Ursus.

Background[edit]

Vladimir Ivanovich, a strong- willed man despite his natural-born illness, is known as one of the most beloved, yet controversial figures in Ursine history. Once the crown prince of the Ursus Royal Family, Vladimir ascended to the throne succeeding his father Ivan Yevgenyenvich, who led the country during the Battle of the Four Emperors. Although the entry to the conflict was albeit late, Ursus saw the opportunity to expand its territory into more fertile soils. [2]

During the early days of his reign, Vladimir displayed a level of tactical acumen and leadership never seen before in Ursine history. Impressed by Gaul's productivity on Originium technology, Vladimir used the achieved spoils of war to strengthen Ursus' military power, building a powerful warship fleet.[3] In 1033, he ordered the relocation of Deity Grypherburg and the imperial palace onto a large-scale mobile platform as part of the various policies that would led the empire to the route of modernization and industrialization, turning the capital into Ursus' main industrial center.[4] The opening of a large number of Originium military factories under his lead also represented a dramatic growth in Ursus' economic development, and as such, many tycoons and businessmen rose in prominence in the aristocracy, causing dissatisfaction within the conservative "Old nobility." [5]

Vladimir was described as the "soul of Ursus;" Rather than a tyrant, he was considered an ambitious but wise monarch who distanced himself from political power.[6] He achieved various military victories such as the Ninth and Tenth Ursus-Kazimierz Wars, which resulted in the occupation of numerous Kazimierzian regions and cities and forced the campaign knights to retreat their defense line for almost a hundred kilometers. His militaristic craze led Ursus to intensify their attacks against neighboring countries like Leithanien and Higashi, and even forced the Samifjod tribes to retreat and migrate to colder zones. It's also rumored that he secretly drew his defense line to Londinium.[5] Unlike other monarchs, Vladimir was known for his tolerance towards other races and ethinic groups —including the Wendigos. In fact, he employed a large number of non-Ursi people against all odds, and even allowed those with outstanding achievements to join the nobility as well.[7] However, despite being praised by his benevolence even by his followers, especially Buldrokkas'tee the Wendigo, Vladimir never cared about the Infected population and couldn't even satisfy their needs, thus he was responsible for promoting Anti-Infected policies to the constitution.[8][9] [10]

In 1072, a decade after their last war with Kazimierz, Vladimir's health deteriorated, and all the annexed Kazimierzian territories fell into the hands of the corrupt nobles. To cover up their crimes and distract people from the problems within the government, the infamous "Bloodpeak Campaign", a full-scale war against Higashi, would come into fruition. However, Vladimir's son Fyodor Vladimirovich, then the crown prince, addressed the military's corruption and dispatched the Fourth and Sixth Armies as a distraction, but nevertheless this operation turned out for the worst as Higashi launched an attack against Ursus, culminating in a bizarre, yet humiliating defeat in their own homeland. The following year, Vladimir passed away and was then succeeded by Fyodor, who imposed various reforms as a last-ditch effort to maintain the country in one piece, including restrictions to the military. [5][11][12]

Vladimir's sudden death marked an abrupt end to Ursus' expansionism, and the situation reached a turning point a year later with the Great Rebellion. Even to this day, his legacy is cherished by the hearts of many Ursines, especially the old nobility.
