Description
The shoe-shiner trembles as he enters the Bellone famiglia parlor.
He trembles not because this is Bellone territory. He had shined Bernardo's shoes for thirty years, and the man always respected those who respected him. The last time he had stepped into this parlor, it was so that he could offer Bernardo the chance to name his son.
His fear comes from the fact that the one sitting here today is not Bernardo, but his son, Leontuzzo.
He has not heard much about the Bellone heir. All he knew was that the young master had never come to him for a shoe shining.
"My father isn't here at the moment, but you can trust me as you trusted him."
His words calm him a bit, allowing the shoe-shiner to explain why he had no choice but to come:
His son leads a decent, honorable life, and fell in love with a lady from Columbia. However, that lady was also being pursued by a maniac who didn't take kindly to a rival. Three nights ago, his son was cornered by that maniac and beaten within an inch of his life. He'd sought aid from the courts, but the man belonged to a Columbian famiglia, and his lawyers were easily able to secure a "not guilty."
"When I was leaving the courtroom, he stepped in front of me and shoved two banknotes into my pocket. He laughed as he told me it was for my son's medical fees. I..." The shoe-shiner went on, tears streaming from his wizened eyes.
Leontuzzo listens in silence. He knows that if his father were here, he would surely give the old man a pat on the shoulder, acknowledge his suffering, then provide a solution to this. A humane way.
Generally speaking, these things could only be resolved with bloodshed.
But that was not how he does things.
"What is it you wish for, signor?"
"I have no requests, Don Leontuzzo, other than justice for my boy."
"Justice. Am I to understand that you want this man to feel the same pain your son did?"
"That's right. Nothing more."
Leontuzzo snaps his fingers, and a red-headed young man steps out from a door to the side.
"Demetri, go investigate the gang behind that guy first."
"Easy enough, but what comes next?"
"Next... If I'm not mistaken, those Columbian gangs want to sidestep us and cozy up to the local government. Then let's propose sending local 'talents' to the Columbian frontier. Hopefully, every famiglia will enthusiastically agree. Let them send off a few stronzi who should have been exiled long ago."
The red-headed youth snaps his fingers. "So we'll ship this guy off too?"
"Exactly."
"Capisco."
With that final declaration, the man leaves the room. Leontuzzo turns towards the astonished shoe-shiner. "This is the justice I can give you. Are you satisfied with it, signor?"
The shoe-shiner quickly catches on, and his gaze turns from astonishment to gratitude.
"Take this."
"This is..."
"My pistola. Place it by your shoe-shiner, and nobody will cause you trouble."
"But—"
"Don't worry. I barely use it. Whenever you feel like you can sleep easy again, just give it back to the guard downstairs."

Description
主驾驶席上,莱昂图索有些紧张,今天是他第一次正式开车上路。
观察左右,调整座椅,调整后视镜,系好安全带,确认档位——完成了这些步骤后,他有些忐忑地看向副驾驶席,那里坐着拉维妮娅,他的教练。直到拉维妮娅点了点头,他才微微松了口气,然后,扭动钥匙,启动引擎。车辆缓缓离开车库,驶入街道。
街上一如既往地下着淅沥的小雨,莱昂图索打开雨刷器,小心地踩着踏板,不敢开得太快。
“莱昂,你开得太慢了,这样练习是没什么效果的。”拉维妮娅作为他学车的教官,对他一如既往地严格。
“你越是提醒我,我越是紧张,拉维妮娅。”莱昂图索紧握着方向盘,认真盯着眼前的道路,甚至连头也没有侧一下。
“是谁今早在餐桌上兴致勃勃地说等德米特里回来,要给他露一手?”
“那是我被面包的热气蒸坏了脑袋。”
说话间,车开到了一个十字路口前,前方的红灯即将转绿,人行道上,几个行人正在通行。然而,几个行人似乎是看到了驶来的车辆上面的标志,立刻低下头,快步走过人行道。
不幸的是,其中一个人走到一半,绊了一跤,摔倒在人行道上。
这时,拉维妮娅看向莱昂图索,眼神像是在问:“现在,你的正确做法是什么?”
“......我该狠狠踩下踏板,冲过红灯。最好溅起一阵水花,把行人吓一跳。”
嘴上这么说着,莱昂图索却放缓了车速,车缓缓停在了人行道前。
摔倒的人此时也爬了起来,向车内的两人微微点头表示感谢之后,快步离开。
拉维妮娅有些欣慰地开口:“如果大部分家族的人能像你一样开车——哪怕只是刚才这点微不足道的事情,我每年要判的案子恐怕都能少十分之一。”
“那些交通规则太繁琐了,老实说,我也不想去记。”绿灯亮起,莱昂图索重新启动了车辆,“不过,我最近越来越理解一件事,我们之所以遵守所谓的规则,并不是因为它们天然存在,而是因为,它们是人们追求公平的过程中发现的不言自明的道理。”
