Description
The girl doesn't remember how long she slept. The only thing she felt was the harsh sun beating down on her, so she hid herself under the covers defiantly. But the wind blowing in through the window brought with it the comforting smell of lemons. So the girl poked her head out and opened her eyes.
The girl saw fever medicine and half a glass of water on the bedside table, and her grandmother sitting on the side of the bed, looking at her worriedly with others. She was lifted by her grandmother while the others took turns looking at the number on the thermometer. Soon, the air was no longer weighed down with anxiety, returning to its usual joy and noise.
Her grandmother told the girl that she had a high fever and slept for days on end. The smell of oatmeal roused her hunger, and the few little tomatoes in the bowl were so vibrant she didn't want to look away, but the girl's eyes still drifted towards the window, where the citrus scent came from. She sees the clothes on the line swinging their hems, and the lemon tree in the yard waving at her, just like it did every breezy morning.
The girl became slightly more awake, but she felt like some of her memories had become blurry.
A few days later, the girl nervously asked her grandmother whether the memories were real, but she reassured her that it was just a nightmare she had when she was sick.
Instead of taking her bubble wand and emptying all the soapy water in the bottle, her grandmother simply gathered the adults together to discuss leaving Siracusa and to plan the family's move to Columbia.
But that wasn't a nightmare; it really did happen, and the girl saw it with her own eyes.
The girl remembered the bubbles she chased after that day. Remembered the silhouette of her grandmother working in the alleys. Remembered how it didn't rain that day, but there was still lots of water on the road, flowing slowly into the ditch. Remembered the smell of blood, smoke and sweat, mingling together and attracting swarms of insects hovering over the water.
...Many years later, the happenings of that day were as vivid as if they had happened yesterday, but thankfully, Aroma remembered one of her grandmother's sayings—
"If you can't cover up the bad smells, then open the window and let it waft out!"
"In the end, the fragrant smells that accompany us always will remain."
In a package from her grandmother, Aroma saw the glass bottle from her childhood. She pulled out the cork, dipped it in some soapy water, and slowly, gently, blew a bubble.
She smelled it. It was still, and would always remain, lemon-scented.
