Kazdel, Kazdel. As they fled from Leithanien, the squad members surrounded Mudrock, their conversations always returning to Kazdel. If only we were in Kazdel, we'd have our people, we'd have food and drink, and most importantly, we'd have a place to settle. Most of the squad were Leithanian locals who had joined the Mudrock Squad there, and a few were old members who had been with her since Ursus. It used to be that most drifted between a few settlements near their homelands—taking odd jobs, or scrambling in mercenary groups to scrape up some business. Nobody had been to Kazdel before, but their homesickness for it was united in its fidelity, every bit the real thing. We must cross the mountain range before dark, Mudrock told them at dawn before they set off. They crossed a rugged plains, damp vapor enveloping them, the mountains growing hazy and blotted in their shrinking sight. Heavy beads condensed upon every wild, virid blade of the sloping meadow, steeping them in mossy hues, bowing them in dejection. The weary squad trod upon weary grass, the future that faced them only more wearisome still. Beyond the mountains floated a great black cloud, a sign of the torrents to come. Rapidly, thick fog fell from the high heavens to rest between the peaks, shrouding their summits, only drops of snow-white visible—if that—in the haze. All looked to Mudrock, their silence asking her: What do we do? She came to a towering cliffside, and called softly to those friends who never once spoke. As if answering in harmony, the stern rock delightfully parted by Child of Soil and Stone's request, then reformed, and all now found a simple yet comforting alcove before them. As night fell, those sheltered in the cave found the rain yet to abate. Hoping their pursuers would be tarried by it too, one spoke half-jokingly—if only we were in Kazdel. I hope it'll be firm enough for us there, sturdy, just like this place our leader made for us, actually. In the stifling atmosphere, others too began to chat of their imagined Kazdel until the dead of night. The silent, wordless Mudrock placed a palm gently to the ground, feeling the faint beating of the raindrops against the soil and stone. Yes. If only it were like this.

Description
---
They currently stay in an inconspicuous nook outside the city of Kazdel. The ruins resemble a building made of stone, though most of its structure has collapsed, gaps between bricks and stone gradually worn open by the elements, leaving only a corner barely holding up, just enough to function as a shelter. Kazdel casts an enormous shadow, shrouding the entire ruin in a darkness heavier than night itself. Mudrock heard about the ruins' history from the Sarkaz living nearby. They said it might have been a royal court's fort separating them from the rest of Kazdel, or perhaps it used to be a statue of some ancient King of Sarkaz, a king so great that the Kazdel back then managed to make even outbloods kneel. They say it had been destroyed thousands of times, much like Kazdel itself, but somehow always survived every calamity that befell it, miraculously appearing outside every new iteration of Kazdel. However, her squad members are uninterested in these improbable legends. Many of them are not Sarkaz and are unfamiliar with those histories. They only chose this place to shelter in because the sole shabby wall was sturdy enough to protect them from the night wind. In their long journey, they have already gotten used to spending their days alongside soil and stone. The team pitches tents, lights a bonfire, then takes stock of the supplies left for their journey. As they begin sharing wildberry wine between each other, Mudrock declares that they will set off again in the morning, to find another settlement they could call home. When the last team member falls asleep at the base of the wall, Mudrock looks at the paper cup in her hand, where an Ursine berry now dyed crimson by the bit of leftover wine lies inside. Just then, the nearby colossus lets out a resounding noise as it gradually moves away into the distance. They could have kissed goodbye to the days where they could only hide in soil and stone. Today, shipments of metal materials for buildings are delivered to Kazdel every moment. New buildings—though not as exquisite as Leithanian spires or Ursine fortresses—rise from the ground every day. The city's bustling new streets and alleys could perhaps give them somewhere to live. One day the squad might manage to find new jobs in there. They could build shops, clinics, schools, become builders of Kazdel like the locals, and maybe even own a small berry garden on the outskirts of the city. Perhaps one day, they can also call Kazdel their home... Mudrock looks towards Kazdel. The city's shadow is finally gone, and the twin moons once again bathe the dilapidated corner with their clean light. She caresses the ancient bricks around her and, for a moment, seems to see new buds sprouting from dry cracks in the rock. She sprinkles the last drops of wine onto the wall before her. They disappear into the rocks like sweet spring water seeping into the desert. Perhaps a day will come when Kazdel will also become fertile soil for all.
