The night is giving way, and the streetlamps are going out one by one. The only light left hangs in front of a food cart on the side of the street, swaying and flickering, steam drifting up beneath it. The vendor sits by his wok, face hidden behind the steam. He sees a customer in the distance, and stands to raise himself up a little. "You haven't been by in forever, Miss." "I'm finally freed up." "You're a busy person. I see you passing through this street every day, but you never sit yourself down here." "One bowl of cart noodles. Oil noodles, curry base, two finballs to top." "Got it." The customer picks herself a spot close to the stovetop, and leisurely seats herself. The cart vendor turns around, stooped over like a fin stranded on land. He ladles out soup to boil the noodles, and chops up the meat, movements fluid and natural. "You're still open so late. Looks like business is good." "All by grace of the Rat King... well, used to be. Now it's by yours, Miss. Back when I was apprenticing, no one would dare open at this hour." "Is your medicine still enough?" "I've got ways to buy it, and I've never dared stop. I'll get sick if I'm not careful, and that'll be a hassle for you." "No, look after yourself. If you do fall sick, that's far more hassle for you than me." "It's out of you and your father's hands I picked my life back up... The fact you'd sit here to eat noodles means you think enough of me." "My dad's goal has always been for everyone to live good lives–" *thunk*– Within the rhythm of the kitchen knife and chopping board lands a heavy, muffled noise, promptly breaking off the subject. "Sorry to scare you, Miss... The new smith here does shoddy work. There used to be a smith next door, went by 'Cleavers Leong.' The knives he sharpened cut fast and shone light. Lovely to use." "What happened to him?" "Died. Five years ago, he did." "Five years. And people still think about him. He must've been a good man." "Not all that good... You could count on him, but he never held back. Never changed his mind. He made one mistake, that's all it took." "A very serious mistake to make." "You and the Rat King both see right through us. "No need to worry, I can see clearly." "No, you'd better be careful. Us little folk, we need you. We need someone to follow." "It's late. Go on home." "Miss..." "I don't have the guts to blame you, but I just want to ask one thing... "If, right now, you were back then, would you still do the same thing?" "I would."
