Enemy description
The crimson-carapaced, flame-commanding Rathalos, its capacity for flight excels among Flying Wyverns, its aerial assaults and flaming breath combine to dominate over a vast array of life. Owing to the astonishing strength by which it rules the air, it is also known as the "King of the Skies."

Overview[edit]

The King of the Skies lives up to its reputation with extraordinarily high stats, land and aerial capabilities, and while its defenses are severely lacking, it possesses a wide variety of abilities and mechanics which make it uniquely powerful among Arknights' roster of bosses.

Ability Initial CD Cooldown
  • Can neither be Bound nor shifted.
  • Takes up 3 block count.
  • While dazed, Rathalos gains the following traits:
    • Will be forced to land in the Flying State, becoming a ground enemy in the process.
    • Can neither move nor attack, but cannot be blocked.
    • Amplifies damage taken by 100%.
Innate
Grounded State
  • Uses a ranged Physical attack with a range of 1.1.
  • Has a second HP meter below the first that shows the HP of Rathalos' tail which is equal to 600% (Lv0)/550% (Lv1)/500% (Lv2) of its maximum HP and reduced when it is attacked from the rear. Depleting Rathalos' tail HP will sever it, causing Rathalos to become dazed (see above) for 12 seconds and permanently weakens its Tailspin and Aerial Claw Attack.
Grounded State traits
Roar
Roars immediately after spawning to Stun all friendly units on the map for 5 seconds.
Tailspin
A tail swipe attack that deals Physical damage equal to 150% ATK to friendly units over a 180° angle behind Rathalos with a radius of 2.05; if its tail was severed, Tailspin's damage and radius are reduced to 60% and 1.05, respectively.
Only used in the Grounded State.
10 seconds
Fire Breath
A fireball attack that deals Arts damage equal to Rathalos' ATK towards the furthest friendly unit within a range of 3.
Only used in the Grounded State.
2 sec. 3.6 sec.
Uses Roar after 3 seconds and revives over 7.6 seconds when defeated in the Grounded State before entering the Flying State.
Flying State
  • Now becomes an aerial enemy.
  • HP and ATK increased by 320000 (Lv0)/390000 (Lv1)/470000 (Lv2) and 300, respectively.
  • MSPD increased by 300%.
  • Now uses a ranged Arts attack by launching fireballs that can only target friendly units in front but with an unlimited range, inflicts Burn Damage equal to 20% ATK, and prioritize targets with the highest HP percentage.
    • Because of this, Rathalos will prioritize turning towards the side with the most friendly units to attack them.
  • If a Flash Grenade is used against Rathalos in the Flying State, it will be dazed (see above) for 12 seconds on the first use, 10 seconds on the second use, and 8 seconds from the third use onward, after which it uses Backfire after 20 seconds or upon taking 40000 (Lv0 and Lv1)/45000 (Lv2) damage.
Flying State traits
Backfire
Immediately breathe fire to the ground, dealing Arts damage and inflicting Burn Damage equal to 60% and 5% ATK, respectively, to nearby friendly units within a radius of 1.2 and ignites the affected tiles for 4 seconds, dealing Arts damage equal to 20% of Rathalos' ATK every second to friendly units on them.
  • If Rathalos uses Backfire after recovering from being dazed, the Arts damage is increased to 80% ATK but its Burn Damage is reduced to 3% ATK.
Only used in the Flying State.
Aerial Claw Attack
Swipes all around, dealing Physical damage equal to 160% ATK (90% if Rathalos' tail was severed) to nearby friendly units within a radius of 2.5 (1.5 if Rathalos' tail was severed).
Only used in the Flying State.
8 sec. 13 sec.
Aerial Heat Breath
Breathes a fan of fire over a 100° angle ahead of Rathalos with a radius of 3, dealing Arts damage and inflicting Burn Damage equal to 50% ATK to friendly units in its wake and ignites the affected tiles, dealing Arts damage equal to 30% of Rathalos' ATK every second to friendly units on them.
Only used in the Flying State.
Lv0: 25 sec.
Lv1: 10 sec.
Lv2: 10 sec.
30 sec.
Rushing Fire Breath
Winds up and spits fire in a straight line over a 6×3 area in front of Rathalos, dealing Arts damage and Burn Damage equal to 80% and 50% ATK, respectively, to friendly units caught in its wake and ignites the affected tiles, dealing Arts damage equal to 30% of Rathalos' ATK every second to friendly units on them.
Only used in the Flying State.
Lv0: 30 sec.
Lv1: 30 sec.
Lv2: 15 sec.
40 sec.
Upon reaching a specific tile on the map, Rathalos becomes invulnerable and retreats to its den, located on an initially inaccessible area until all other enemies are defeated, at which the battlefield shifts toward the den and the operation enters the Nest Phase.
  • Rathalos is invulnerable until the Nest Phase begins, preventing it from being attacked early with global attacks (e.g. Ambriel's Skill-Ambriel2.png Radar Sweep).
Nest Phase
  • Rathalos is asleep until attacked or after 600 seconds have passed after the Nest Phase begins, at which it wakes up in the Grounded State and moves toward the Protection Objective in the den.
  • All deployed friendly units will be automatically retreated before the Nest Phase begins and can be redeployed instantly after the Nest Phase begins (although their DP cost still ramps up as usual); units that are waiting for redeployment will not have their redeployment time refreshed, however.

Trivia[edit]

  • Rathalos' code is actually the amount of days between the original Monster Hunter release date (March 11, 2004) to when A Flurry to the Flame is released in the CN server (March 7, 2023): about 6935 days or 19 years.
  • All of Rathalos' attacks are direct parallels to its own attacks in the MonHun games, as are several of the mechanics exclusive to its fight including:
    • Attacking and severing its tail to weaken its tail attacks (although it does not give extra rewards like in MonHun).
    • Using Flash Grenades to bring it to the ground when it's flying, as well as it gradually building up resistance to them with repeated uses.
    • Ambushing it when it retreats to its nest to rest, such as by placing a large number of (Originium) Barrel Bombs around it. High-Energy Originium Barrel Bombs also have a hidden effect of briefly amplifying Rathalos' damage taken when used while he is sleeping, referencing how sleeping monsters are subject to a large damage multiplier in the original games.
