The Timestream Guardian used to be a guardian statue that watches over the gates to an ancient temple in Eqlumuy Oasis, Szubat-Arsalan, Sargon dating to the reign of Lugalszargus over a Terran millennia ago and is sacred to the Zümrütrüyası cult. The Guardian is not merely a statue, however; sometime in the past, Elliot Glover's mentor, Professor Thorne, stumbled into the statue and installed a prototype mobility operation unit on it. The Guardian self-activates for unknown reasons and wanders off aimlessly at some point after the Zümrütrüyası were forced out of their homes and takes refuge in the temple, leaving the confused Zümrütrüyası to believe that the statue had been stolen somehow.
After the Doctor runs into the Zümrütrüyası while looking for help to travel through Eqlumuy Oasis, their priestess requests that the gang find and recover the Guardian. While looking for the Guardian as it wanders, the Doctor runs into Passenger who turned out to be looking for the Guardian as well. Together, they were able to corner the Guardian and disabled it, and Passenger identified it as one of Prof. Thorne's works. He decided to stay with the Guardian for a while to reflect upon his memory with Prof. Thorne.
