Lee's Detective Agency is an organization in Arknights. It is an odd jobs business under the guise of a private investigation firm based in Lungmen, Yan, that is run by the namesake Mr. Lee and his personal, close-knit "family."

Background[edit]

Foundation[edit]

The Detective Agency's foundation date is unknown, though it was not long after Mr. Lee, then a more reserved and introverted man, moved to Lungmen to start a new life and make a living.[1] At first, the scope of the business was quite wide, offering services such as locating people, address searches, extramarital affairs, legal consult, and evidence collection and recording. He even accepted commissions from the Municipal Government. During its early years, Lee had to register his business as "Lee's Detective Agency" due to Yan's legal requirements, and Lee himself was its only member.[2] Years later, Mr. Lee began to act as a guardian for Waai Fu, the daughter of his close friend Tianpei, after Tianpei’s departure for a solo journey. While he takes care of her as her step-uncle, he has also been trying to search for her father with the aid of another close friend in Shangshu, Magistrate Liang Xun.[3] Meanwhile, he also took in Hung and Aak after a gang fight and has since treated them as his "children."[2][4] These youngsters would become part of Mr. Lee's family rather than simple employees.

Organization[edit]

Despite nominally being a detective agency, Lee's business has no actual organizational structure. Although Aak, Hung, and Waai Fu are too young to make independent decisions compared to Mr. Lee, they play different important roles within the Agency, taking part in the action. Mr. Lee, on the other hand, prefers to take a more laissez-faire treatment towards them and lets the outside world see them in action. According to him, he prefers to silently follow them and arrange their responsibilities, so all matters can be resolved in a reasonable amount of time. [2][5]

On one hand, the Agency has never advertised itself on any kind of media, and it only accepts requests from detectives, but on the other hand, they are also willing to accept numerous tasks from their client’s requests. Normally, the Agency only receives clients who come in person on weekdays. However, if the client wants to express their sincerity and generosity, or simply can't stand the messy work environment, they can invite Mr. Lee out of his "comfort zone" and discuss matters in various social places around Lungmen. [2] Most of the Agency's physical work is handled by the family members. For example, Hung oversees cooking, Aak provides medical treatment, and Waai Fu takes care of combat and command tactics. [2]

Although Mr. Lee claims that his martial and Originium Arts are mediocre, thereby staying on his office and reading the newspaper, rumors about his combat prowess occasionally surface.[5] According to the accounts of an anonymous Rhodes Island's field Operator who once worked with the Agency, there was one time when R.I. got itself in the middle of a conflict with the Lungmen triads. When the Operators were being chased down by three dozen thugs, Mr. Lee told them to retreat and stayed back to hold them off. When the Operator made it two city blocks away from the scene, he heard a loud explosion from behind, and saw Lee walking towards him, unscratched. [5][6]

Through Mr. Lee's familiarity with the underworld of Lungmen's slums, the Agency is not afraid to enter gray areas to accomplish their missions.[4] Thanks to Mr. Lee's huge network of acquaintances, including his friendship with Wei Yenwu and the Rat King, they are able to avoid the eyes of the L.G.D. just like Penguin Logistics, even though they are often involved in many dubious activities such as gang fights.[2]

Unofficial English translations provided by Jowett.

"It is true that Lord Wei invited Mr. Lee. After all, it's a matter of fact that the two sat together at the finball stall, but there are different versions of what they talked about.
"In simple terms, Lord Wei came to visit and asked Mr. Lee for something, But Mr. Lee only invited him to have a meal at the finball stall. In the end, he declined Lord Wei's invitation to the place where both used different dipping sauces for the finballs, indicating that they weren't compatible with each other. However, the audience always had some recreations based on their own expectations. After all, the two seemed to have some conflicts in the past. There are many versions that explain the real reason why Mr. Lee refused Lord Wei's invitation, including the power struggle theory, the old grudge theory, etc. Among them, the jealousness theory is the most popular."

Headquarters[edit]

The blueprints of the Agency's building

The Agency's building is a small, two-story house located in Lungmen's downtown area, but is rather invisible to most passersby. To access it, one must leave the crowded main street, turn to an alley with a certain height difference, turn left to the third trash bin without a lid, and walk straight past to the residential gates. The Agency's sign can be found on the narrower street. [5]

The headquarters building has a rather amusing origin. When Mr. Lee received his first client, the owner of a renovation company, his mission was to determine the feng shui of his office. Seeing that the man did not have any business due to the lack of old buildings nearby, he declared that the office's feng shui was truly bad. While Mr. Lee suggested his client to move away within three days, he also requested him to have the place rented for just half of its original rent.[8] Nevertheless, despite the cheap rent, they have been notorious for delaying the payment, causing the landlord to pay frequent angry visits.
