The Confessarii (sing. Confessarius) are an organization in Arknights and one of the antagonist factions of the Shadow of a Dying Sun story arc of the Main Theme. They are a Kazdelian Sarkaz secret occult society who seek to ensure their eternal royal bloodline as the King of Sarkaz.
Background[edit]
The origin of the Confessarrii could be traced back to a lineage who became one of the Kings of Sarkaz known as the "King of Usurping Kings." According to Sarkaz oral tradition, the "King of Usurping Kings" was a white-horned Sarkaz who inherited the Black Crown outside the realm of the Royal Court. He mastered a unique kind of Arts that could weave the past, the present, and the future into the sky like threads, allowing his soldiers to face no death.[2] However, he was a greedy, power-craving king who yearned to have his lineage prevail into eternity. So, the King cast powerful Arts onto his future lineage that ensured he could inherit their power. Upon one's death, either through natural means or murder, his soul would immediately possess their offspring so that he could forever become the same "King of Usurping Kings."[3] This lineage would eventually become the current Confessarrii in which all of their members are direct descendants of that King.
Because of the Confessarrii's unique origin, they have been actively aiding the succeeding King of Sarkaz for the remaining millennia while seeking to take the Black Crown back into their hands when the time is ripe. They have investigated the mystery of Originium Arts through mystic rituals and inhuman scientific experimentation traced from Sarkaz's blood memories.[4] To ensure the survival of their eternal lineage, they even went as far as to creating homunculi that could store their souls—one of which being Liz.[3] To this day, the Confessarrii supports the hawkish Royal Court for their vindication of the Teekaz, and they specifically serve as the right-hand of Regent Theresis.
The Confessarii's unique lineage-inherited Arts also gave rise to their proficient necromantic Arts; while they see life as something sacred, they also manipulate life and, with it, death.[5] Through it, they are able to easily "slice" one's soul as if with a blade, and can possess others' bodies upon their death. If allowed, they can even perform rituals that "resurrect" the deceased, as in the case of Theresa.
