Description

Durins resemble dwarves in various mythologies. Their dwarvish traits can be noticed such as a pair of pointed ears and their stout, short stature that is estimated to be around 130 cm. Because of their appearance, they are often mistaken as people suffering from dwarfism due to genetic disease during childhood, and such viewpoint has evolved to become a pejorative rumor filled with racist arrogance and ignorance.[1]

The Durins have some unique cultures. They are natural heavy drinkers who love consuming large amounts of alcohol. As their innate instinct, Durins are highly sensitive to topographical and geological changes, making them excellent miners, geologists, and underground surveyors. They tend to have a simple, primitive, yet optimistic and open mindset which makes them a peaceful race seeking to coexist with others.

All Durins hail from an underground world which is currently unexplored by the surface-dwellers. Each Durin settlement is a city-state possessing technologies that are far advanced than the surface-dwellers, ranging from giant domes that could replicate temperatures of the surface world, self-conscious automatons, to tiny yet complicated Arts devices. Cultures vary between the city-states, yet they can maintain their interaction. Despite their technological advancement, they are neither interested in interfering with the surface world's geopolitics nor making new scientific breakthroughs.[1]

Even though interaction between the Durins and surface-dwellers has lasted throughout human history as historical records or folklore, it is only the most recent centuries that many surface-dwellers collect more information from them thanks to an increase of interaction.[1] This is believed to begin from the construction of the first Durish lift that connects them to the surface in hope to mine upper Originium veins.[2] Many Durins claim that they only come to the surface just for fun and to mitigate frustration from the lack of exciting moments out of their homeland's utopic nature. On the other hand, surface scholars remain doubtful over such simplistic accounts, yet they cannot further investigate due to a lack of information.[1][3]

Durin-Sarkaz origin

Similar to the Anasa and Oni, Durins share a common ancestry with the Sarkaz as a Teekaz offshoot. They are believed to be descended from a tribe following Dur'akham, a Teekaz who led his people to delve deeper into the underground to search for possible relics despite the Farchaser's warnings. A prophecy said that he would eventually fall victim to his wounds during the underground expedition, but his descendants and tribesmen continued his mission and never to be seen again.[4] Over the course of history, they evolved independently due to geological isolation that earned their miniature status and the adaptation of their race's name as "Durin," though they have long forgotten their racial origin.

Etymology

Their name derives from Durinn, a dwarf from Norse mythology. This name is later adopted to refer to several prominent "Durin" Dwarf kings of Middle-earth in the literature of J. R. R. Tolkien.

Trivia

  • While the Durins are named after the eponymous dwarves from Tolkien's literature, most of them lack the classical bearded, muscular bodies. Instead, they bear more resemblances with the Hobbits such as their short stature, feeble bodies, and peaceful nature.
  • The Durins' surnames are always based on any physical object or a concept which is likely based on the naming style of the famous Dwarf Thorin Oakenshield.
