The Reprobas are an Ancient race in the world of Arknights.

Description

Beanstalk, a notable Reproba

Reprobas have the traits of hyenas (family Hyaenidae). Their hyenid traits can be noticed such as pricked ears and tails with tufts of hair, spots, or stripes. They have a moderate physical fitness when compared with other races, although female Reprobas are generally stronger than males. Reprobas are one of the three races separated from the Perros due to cultural and biological differences along with the Lupos and Vulpos which often results in mistakes of recognition by other races, but their population is the least of them all as they are the last Perro subgroup to be diverged since the Aslanian Conquest.[1] Reprobas also includes various Elder subraces, though many of them have already integrated into the Reproba population.

Reprobas practices several ancient cultures that are seen as peculiar to other races. Although Reprobas inherits the Perros' large family culture similar to the Lupos', there are some differences. Unlike Perros, Reprobas value internal unity and discipline the most. A traditional Reprobah family is a matriarchy in which the most powerful matriarch leads the family who is nominally elected by many different tribes as their "guardian." Despite spending most of their lives in the arid wilderness, a Reproba family can grow up to more than a hundred family members. Reprobas also have a tradition of close interactions with the Sarkaz since the tribal era, but such practice is a very controversial one among other Perro subgroups due to their enmity against the Sarkaz. Consequently, there are discriminatory perceptions on the Reprobas in which they are often described as having similarities with the Sarkaz, resulting in various ghost stories having them as main characters, though many Reprobas do not bother over the discrimination.[1]

As a very rare race, most of the Reproba population can be found in the desert regions of western Sargon. They have been living as desert wanders which nourishes their rich culture. Throughout history, Reproba warriors are highly valued by the Shahanshah owing to their long-standing military tradition. Legend even says that female Reproba elite warriors had formed a tough frontline during the invasion of Sargon by the Nightzmoran hordes. Entering the modern era, many Reprobas have left Sargon and spread across Terra as immigrants. By utilizing their knowledge in wilderness survival, many of them have been dedicating themselves in biological research, geology, and animal husbandry.[1]

Etymology

Reproba derives from Reprobus, a name for Saint Christopher; in Eastern Orthodox Church, he is often depicted as a person with a dog head. The name reprobus is a Latin word meaning "false; rejected."[2]

Trivia

  • In real world, hyenas are grouped together with mongooses in the Feliformia suborder, which also includes all cats (domestic and non-domestic, the Felidae family). As such, it would be more appropriate that Rebbah characters are Felines instead, like how Folinic (who is based on mongooses) is classified as one.
    • Ironically, in the lore, Reprobas are descended from Perros, which is based on the popular misconception in our world that hyenas are canids due to their canid-like traits.
  • In earlier translation before the release of Beanstalk, Reproba was translated as "Rebbah," a name that is likely derived from the Maltese word "to cause to win," rebbaħ,[3] with its root word coming from the Arabic word for "to win," rabbaḥa ( رَبَّحَ). The name was meant to reflect the brash nature of a hyena.
    • On the other hand, there are only two known Reproba operators: Beanstalk and Spot. As of August 2024, only Spot's file remains the older translation as "Rebbah."
