Expeditioner's Joklumarkar: Foldartals

From Arknights Terra Wiki

You can obtain Foldartals from battles and Clairvoyance, and they can make a huge impact on nodes on the map.
—Loading screen tip in Expeditioner's Joklumarkar

Foldartals allow the player to influence the Expeditioner's Joklumarkar run's environment by manipulating the type of nodes and providing helpful bonuses upon accessing them, and are divided into two pairs: Layout (Aestar; ᛇᛏᚨᚱ) to select the subjected node(s) and Source (Kvama; ᚲᚢᚨᛗᚨ) which applies an effect to the selected node(s).

The Foldartals need to be declared on the main map — before entering any certain node — to be effective, which would lower Collapse by at least 1 and could be more with certain Accords and Flairs (explained below). If one enters hidden operations in non-combat nodes and uses a combat-related Source Foldartal, the effectiveness will be further amplified.

There are 38 Foldartals made up of 19 Layout and Source ones further divided into four themes distinguished by their color scheme: Clan (Thjodar; ᚦᛃᛟᚦᚨᚱ), Nature (Andar; ᚨᚾᛞᚨᚱ), Soul (Snjofna; ᛊᚾᛃᛟᚠᚾᚨ), and Society (Dikilleikar; ᛞᛁᚲᛁᛚᛖᛁᚲᚨᚱ); Foldartals of different themes can be paired together but Society ones must be paired with each other, allowing a total of 325 possible combinations, and pairing a Layout and Source Foldartal of the same theme will trigger an Accord (Kvaethir) that gives additional benefits. There are also four Flairs (Kenningar; ᚲᛖᚾᛁᛜᚨᚱ) which enhances the Foldartal's effects and might be embedded to one when obtained during a Braving Nature +3 or higher run.

Foldartals come in three tiers, with the first denoted by a four-pointed star (✦), the second by a five-pointed star (★), and the third by a six-pointed star (✶). The higher the Foldartal's tier, the stronger its effects will be, with the third-tier Foldartals are locked until a certain condition is met.

Keep in mind that Bosky Passages and Dreadful Foes cannot be turned into something else with Foldartals, and all Foldartals cannot be used on Prophecies.

Background

An example of the Samifjod Foldartals by interpreting the pattern of tree barks

Foldartals are wood barks fallen off from Samifjod tribal sacred trees. With specific runes on them, they represent the message of the "All-Father" – Sami Itself wants to convey with his children, the Samifjod. These messages may relate to the past, the future, or some pure emotion. Interpreting Foldartals is complicated because given the time, location, and people decrypting them, even same runes could yield drastically different meanings.

To carefully follow the will of Sami, Snowpriests and shamans in Sami tribes are trained to interpret Foldartals and offer prophecies and guidance according to them. They would piece two Foldartals together: the upper one is called the Layout (Gera Koma; ᚷᛖᚱᚨ ᚲᛟᛗᚨ), and the lower one is called the Source (Gera Aesa; ᚷᛖᚱᚨ ᛇᛊᚨ), and make an interpretation, which is called a Declaration (Gera Vaenda; ᚷᛖᚱᚨ ᚹᛇᚾᛞᚨ).

List

Special thanks to RobinYPW for providing the etymologies regarding the Foldartals' runic names in their respective articles, which the Arknights Terra Wiki displays in Elder Futhark as a stand-in to Sami letters used in-game.

Tips

Compared to Plays in Phantom & Crimson Solitaire and Enlightenments in Mizuki & Caerula Arbor, some Foldartals' effects only work in certain nodes, while the others affect the whole run. Either way, they can be activated at the player's discretion, as long as there are Foldartals and valid nodes to declare, and multiple effects can be active at the same time. Therefore, choosing the correct Foldartals and the right moment to declare them is very important to reduce the run's difficulty.

  • Because declaring Foldartals will lower Collapse value by 1, only do so when it is greater than 0, and exercise caution if the Foldartals and their Accords and Flairs' effects would increases the Collapse reduction.
  • Some Foldartals can change the selected node(s)' type, which is quite useful in case the player cannot deal with the said node(s).
  • To avoid wasting Rage's effect, only declare this Foldartals at the nodes that will allow recruitment.
  • Save Clan Foldartals granting buffs for Dreadful Foes (and some Emergency Operations if necessary), as this will make the said Operations much easier. However, avoid overusing Silence's Accord effect in one Operation, lest the Shieldguards will occupy good melee tiles.
