The youngest son of Kirill the Kazimierzian national hero, the uncle of Margaret and Maria Nearl, and a cousin of Zofia, Młynar Nearl was once a chivalrous Pegasian knight-errant saving many lives around the rural areas of Kazimierz together with the bounty hunter Toland Cash. His ruthless yet precise justice had made him a legendary hero, the one who is occasionally referred to as "the Tenebrous Knight" despite his disinterest in knightly titles. However, everything changes fifteen years ago when his elder brother Schnitz and his wife Yolanta, the parents of the Nearl sisters, suddenly vanished under mysterious circumstances following a mission from the Adeptus. After years of searching, Młynar's search was in vain. Reality forced him to give up his idealism and leave his sworn brothers behind.[1]

Since then, Młynar has been disillusioned by Kazimierz's current situation where knights are seen as more of a tool for the masses' entertainment instead of their protection. As a matter of fact, he refuses to inherit Margaret's position as the Nearls' Knight Primus after her exile and initially opposes Maria's involvement in the Kazimierz Major. Ironically, he himself is a salaryman who has served the very system he despises and has been subservient to his directors who enjoyed the most from the commercialization of knights he abhors, working for ten years without taking a single leave. Deep inside his heart, however, Młynar can be roused to take actions that made him the hero that he once was, if his hand is forced for some reason.[2]

Młynar first appeared in Maria Nearl before being introduced as an Operator with the release of An Obscure Wanderer.

Plot

Maria Nearl

From the very beginning, Młynar has been strongly dissuading Maria from pursuing the idea of fighting for the dignity of the Nearl family. He believes that Kazimierz is unworthy of the Nearl's glory due to the rampant commercialization of the Major.[3] On the other hand, he seems to be embroiled by the endless work from his corporate superiors, leading to his disinterest in Maria's affair. Especially when Marcin persuades him to help Maria in her match after her victory over the Left-handed Knight, he baffles that it is Maria's own choice and states that he had no time to deal with the nonsense.[4]

After Margaret's unexpected return, his disdain becomes much stronger. When she decides to take part in the Major, Młynar objects and orders her to leave Kazimierz before the situation turns for the worse. Nevertheless, Margaret insists. He then declares to have a duel with his niece in order to "teach her a lesson."[5]

However, Mylnar's "teaching" is for naught. The duel ends with Margaret defeating Młynar after his sword is shattered. Although he admires her improved skills, he also warns her not to have too many people dragged into her affair. Just then, a sudden phone call interrupts their talk and Młynar quickly leaves to answer it. While most of the call are about some business matters, Młynar also responds to Toland who has been hiding inside the manor.

After the call, Zofia approaches him to discuss about the earlier duel. Zofia notes that Mageret has become stronger ever since her exile and her companionship with the two Sarkaz. At the same time, she wants Młynar to humble himself and talk to her privately. To her disappointment, Młynar points out that Zofia has become more like them who like to point fingers at him. She then wishes him good luck in his work and leaves the room.[6]

Near Light

Even though Młynar continues to mock the Nearl sisters' participation in the Major, he actually provides some secret aid behind the scene by hiring Toland to protect them whenever needed.[7] Still, the two shows a somewhat uneasy relationship. Toland hopes that he should come out and help them. In turn, Młynar refuses, stating that Toland must not drag him into the affair as he will become a target of the Armorless Union. When talking about the Union's attempt to purge the Infected ghettos in Kawalerielki, Młynar believes that it is the Infected's matter and he has no interest in dealing with it. In the end, Toland advices that Młynar should quickly make a choice as his neutrality would inevitably come to an end.[8]

Shining, Młynar and Roy having an awkward night talk on a bench

Toland's prediction is correct after Maria is kidnapped by the Union during Margaret's match with the Candle Knight.[9] As a consequence, Młynar is completely dragged into the Major incident. He reluctantly provides his help by stopping the Union from purging the Infected ghetto in Area 0. While he is sitting on a bench alone, reading his newspaper, and waiting for his enemies, Roy the Lazurite teases him and requests him to leave the spot. Młynar refuses, stating that he is just an ordinary man waiting for someone. The two are already in an awkward situation, but the matter becomes worse when Shining the Confessarius arrives and sits beside Młynar. In the end, Roy and his men are forced to retreat. Shining thanks Młynar for his help and Młynar states that he will no more interfere too much in the affair.[10]

People like Toland and Madam Russell the Grand Knight have been hoping that Młynar will return back to his heroism. During the night of the second Kawalerielki Separation, Madam Russell visits him. She wonders that whether the wandering hero will come back and save the day.[11] Later, Młynar comes out with Toland to check out the total blackout. Toland then uses the blackout as a metaphor to describe Młynar's long sleep from his duty.[12] As for the Silverlance Pegasi, they have a great respect for him in the name of the Nearls. But Młynar humbly refuses their salute, stating that he is nothing more than an ordinary man.[13]

In the end, the entire Major incident slowly wakes him up even though he tries to resist it. During Margaret's historical march with the Blood Knight to the Champion's Hall, he encounters Roy once again to stop his assassination on her niece. Roy teases that Młynar is not even a knight, but before he could ever notice it, Młynar has swiftly placed his sword onto his neck. In turn, Młynar proclaimes that Kazimierz had no right to knight the Nearl family.[2]

In the aftermath, Młynar takes a three-month leave from his company and leaves Kawalerielki. While he takes the chance to continue his search for the missing parents of the Nearl sisters, he also pays a visit to the Darksteels of the Armorless Union, who apparently recognizes him from way before. He leaves a stern warning against ever attempting to harm his family, stating that they will pay the price for it if they do. In response, the Darksteels already ordered an immediate stop of all attacks against Rhodes Island and the Nearls.[14]
