Menat-Ha'mait, or Menat for short, is a city in eastern Sargon.

Background[edit]

Even if the river dries, and the city is buried beneath the sands, it will not fade.

The history of Menat-Ha'mait traces back to the legend of Shahanshah Lugalszargus' treasure trove, said to be located beneath the city. He ordered the construction of his trove not to preserve his name's legacy but rather leave behind his interpretations of time and life, so future generations could study and imitate them. Thus, a thousand years ago, Sargonian historians preserved the Shahanshah's words through ancient hologram technology they discovered, allowing him to "appear" in some capacity.[5] During the "Aslan Wars" that sparked after Lugalszargus' death, tales of its content have intrigued and attracted countless Lords Ameer and treasure hunters to come looking for fame and fortune, laying the foundation of Menat-Ha'mait. But the destruction of the Stargate in the southern Foehn Hotlands during the Nightzmoran Conquests have caused dramatic climate changes, and the rising temperatures led to a flood that destroyed the old city. The Lords Ameer's hunters thought that the trove was washed away by the deluge and left, but at the same time, many merchants and craftsmen decided to settle down and form a community. Thus, Menat-Ha'mait was rebuilt, albeit as a humble village of traders. [4][6][7]

Three centuries ago, the joint armies of the Lords Ameer and padishahs came to Menat-Ha'mait, interrogating the villagers about the whereabouts of the Shah's trove's entrance, amputating their hands if they refused to speak. A gemwright who had already lost his hands offered to guide the soldiers. Eventually, they found themselves in front of Zubayr the Zhayedan, who vowed himself to protect the treasury in Lugalszargus' name. After a bloody battle, Zubayr was easily defeated, but the soldiers couldn't open the treasury without the Zhayedan's Originium Arts, so they salvaged the jewels where his consciousness was stored. The craftsman's son failed attempting to repair Zubayr's body, and as time passed, he decided to establish the "gem trading post," one of the most important gem stores. [4][6]In recent times, Menat'Hamait's rich cultural and historical heritage has attracted the sights of many tourists and Sargonian historians alike. The city's architecture ismostly compossed by dirt and stone, still retaining Sargon's ancient charm on their design. The most modern buildings — which are just two centuries-old — stand out as an impressive sight, and were expanded alongside the old city blocks. As a result, Menat-Ha'mait blends Sargon's cultural past with the present. The city also counts with a complex, crisscrossed waterway system.[8][7]

True to its tradition, Menat-Ha'mait is Sargon's top jewel trade center, where gems of all kinds and shapes are bought and sold at even skyrocketing prices. The gem trading post occupies a special place within the Grand Bazaar. Unlike other businesses, the gems inside the store aren't sold to the public, and its trading operations are supervised by the "Overseer," whose role is more akin to the decision-maker or defender of the business. In fact, anyone who wants to open their gem store in the Grand Bazaar must ask the overseer for permission, while merchants who enter the building are required to put a dinar on each side of the gold scale of the counter as an oath to live up to their conscience. Almost all the rarest jewels in the city that circulate in the Grand Bazaar are appreciated by the overseers themselves. Back in the day, when the gem trading post was first established, the Grand Bazaar wasn't particularly known for the quality of its products, but thanks to the efforts of multiple generations of overseers, Menat-Ha'mait's trading area began to expand alongside the gem trading post's influence. As a result, the merchants were more eager to cooperate despite the overseer's restrictions. [6]

Menat-Ha'mait's most popular holiday is the Flood Festival that dates from a thousand years ago. Whenever the nearby river floods Menat-Ha'mait's riverways, the citizens bring offerings to the "River god" and sink them on the water in exchange of His grace and good luck.[7] During the Flood Festival, various activities are held, one of which includes the "Harvest Gathering," a show-and-tell competition where people, especially rich and nobles, display their most valuable possessions, and the winners get various prizes from the sponsors.[9]
