Wolumonde is a nomadic town of Leithanien.

Background

A nomadic town predominantly populated by Elafians, Wolumonde is located in northern Leithanien that is close to the Winterwisp Mountains. Hence, it is sometimes nicknamed "Moon of the Winterwisp Mountains." The town is known for its flourishing trade as part of a huge national trading network in the region.[1] A large number of L-44 "gramophones" dots the town, which are Arts towers designed to protect the town from dangers such as wild animals and ruthless invaders.

Originally, Wolumonde was a sedentary settlement, but the constant threat of Catastrophes forced the townsmen to relocate it into its nomadic version. However, much of the Caprinae population, the native of Wolumonde who have settled there for several hundred years, opposed such plan. Calling themselves the "Winterwisps" that was named after the eponymous mountain range, they waged an armed resistance against the authority and constantly raided travelers going to the town. The Winterwisps' rebellion was eventually crushed, but some of them managed to survive in secret and renounced their resistance against Wolumonde. In present days, most of the Caprinae in Wolumonde are descended from the Winterwisps.[2]

Aside from its racial issues, Wolumonde also has to deal with the Infected, who are quarantined to designated quarantine zones close to the Zwölftontechnik Strasse. Tension has only become worse right before another Catastrophe that would arouse its eponymous insurgency.

At the height of the unrest, the streets of Wolumonde had become a vicious battleground

After the insurgency, Wolumonde was able to re-establish connection with other settlements as the Gendarmeries returned to reinforce its order. Unfortunately, the damage was already done. The severe damages done by the insurgency and the fact that it was caused by an Infected-related scandal gave the Leithanian aristocrats enough justification to decommission the nomadic town. At the same time, Severin Hawthorn, Wolumonde's Schultz, was taken into custody for his failure of responsibility and for hiding his Oripathy, and he died in prison due to his illness. The rest of Wolumonde's populace and its relatively unscratched areas were inevitably absorbed to other settlements by the next spring.[3]

Notable residents

  • Atro: A Feline doctor of Rhodes Island and a close friend of Folinic and a acquaintance of Mudrock, Atro acts as R.I.'s representative in Wolumonde where she is responsible for treating the Infected Wolumonders. She was killed when the campsite she were on while on a medical mission outside Wolumonde was set on fire, which is deliberately caused by Biederman as part of a scheme by Thorwald[4] and kickstarts the insurgency in Wolumonde.
  • Biederman: The Catastrophe Messenger of Wolumonde who was not native to the town and Leithania. Following the emergence of the Great Rift, Biederman was blamed by the Wolumonders for his failure and later tricked by Thorwald to murder Atro where he also faked his death.[5] Biederman was found dead in the climax of the insurgency in Wolumonde with Ayerscarpe implying that he was murdered by a Contingency Contract assassin for unknown reasons.[6]
  • Thorwald: Severin's son and Tatjana's lover. He resented the abusive Leithanian aristocrats and tried to get their "attention" by tricking Biederman to murder Atro. He faked his death alongside Biederman on the incident, but later reappeared after the insurgency in Wolumonde to assassinate a Leithanian noble visiting the town. The assassination attempt fails and Thorwald escapes to the Winterwisp Mountains where he commits suicide.[7]

Etymology

Wolumonde likely derives from Woluwe, a stream that flows through Brussels, Belgium. The name is likely a re-rendered version of Wolumond, meaning "the river mouth of Woluwe" in Dutch.[8]
