Gran Faro is a coastal town in Iberia known for housing the last surviving Eye of Iberia.

Background[edit]

A detailed map of Gran Faro, which also includes the Eye of Iberia

Like any other desperate Iberian coastal cities, Gran Faro was once a prosperous place cherished for its Eye of Iberia located fifty nautical miles from land. Once a vibrant port, the local Islanders and Liberi worked together to build a bright future. But unfortunately, it became a victim of the Profound Silence. As the tsunami caused by the Seaborn brutally flooded the Iberian coastlines, Gran Faro miraculously preserved the last surviving Iberian lighthouse. Immediately, the city was promoted to become the final bastion against the abyss following the disaster not only because of its proximity to the sea, but also its close distance to the Bastión de Cánticos, the headquarters of the Inquisition.

Attempts were made to recapture the last Eye of Iberia, and in the beginning, the locals firmly believed that they could revitalize Iberia's lost Golden Age. But all ended in failure. During the last attempt, many of the lighthouse workers, including Jordi's parents, never returned. Not only the beating waves became obstacles to their ships, but also disunity soon broke out in the city. Soon after the last mission, the Inquisitors conducted a purge onto the local Islanders under the suspicion of collaboration with the cultic Church of the Deep. Many Islanders, such as Marlin, lover of the city's mayor Thiago, were taken away and never returned, deeming to be falsely executed.[1][2] Among those victims also included maintenance workers for the Eye of Iberia and sailors of the local Penal Battalion fleet, and their arrest was the last straw that abruptly crushed the locals' spirits and ended Gran Faro's mission. While the purge seemed unreasonable and inhumane, there was half-truth behind the purge: of all the 130 Islanders arrested, half of them are really collaborators with the Church of the Deep, even within the Penal Battalion.[3]

Since the purge, Gran Faro has slowly been forgotten by the Iberian government despite its heroic contribution. It became a gloomy place, and the locals have great resentment against the Inquisitors. Worst of all, the cultists of the Deep have slowly gaining influence in Gran Faro and convert the locals to the Seaborn's hivemind. As a matter of fact, the Inquisition has been keeping constant watch onto the city.

Following the Stultifera Navis incident, the Inquisition finally rooted out all the hidden cultists of the Deep in the city and gained much control of it. As most of the residents move to the hinterland and the Penal Battalion restations its fleet, it becomes a median to reach the closest Aegirian underwater city, Milliarium.[4]
