LAPPLAND SALUZZO The wastes, seeking to break free from it all; an empty husk, filled to the brim. The banished lone wolf who returned to the rainy city. In her eyes, Siracusa is a swamp, and she observes the fates of those who wish to escape it with bated breath. | |

VECCHIE FOTO (Old Photograph)An old photo. The little girl in it is dressed impeccably in formal attire, her somewhat naive eyes looking not at the camera, but at the person standing beside it. Were it not for the striking similarities, no one would believe that this is an old photo of Lappland. |

1-1 | |
---|---|
Alberto | Go. Don't disappoint me. |
Lappland | Arrivederci, padre mio.[note 1] And buongiorno,[note 2] buon pomeriggio,[note 3] and buona notte.[note 4] |
With that, Lappland takes a step back, salutes her seated father overly-respectfully, turns around, and walks out of the room. Several of the mafiosi in the hall breathe a sigh of relief. One man steps forward and stands behind Alberto. | |
Alberto | Capisce?[note 5] |
Mafioso | Capisco.[note 6] |
Alberto | Go then. |
The figure follows Lappland, also disappearing down the hall. | |
Lappland | Let me tell you again why I'm here. I've got a debt to collect for a certain someone. You've paid off the principal. Now comes the interest. |
The dull thud of bodies falling to the ground echoes through the room. | |
Lappland | *yawn*... |
Mafioso | She killed our contact? |
He's in no hurry to head back to report his mistake. Caution told him to stay in position and continue observing, and he dared not approach to inspect the body until long after Lappland left. But, he quickly realizes another problem–the body is still alive. And opens his eyes. | |
Lappland | You really took the bait after all. Alberto sent somebody to keep tabs on me, huh? |
Lappland picks up the weapon at her feet and squints at the man in front of her. | |
Lappland | Say, what's your favorite dessert? |
Danbrown | Who is that...? ...Signorina[note 7] Lappland? That's right, there's no mistaking her... |
The carwash worker puts down the bottle of wine in his hand and looks at the shadow of his knife beneath the moonlight. | |
Danbrown | Fun, fun... |
He passes out between the bottles. |

---|---|
Lappland | Did you get it? |
Capone | I did. You asked me to follow you to the Saluzzo estate just to grab a few old photos? I brought three of my best knives, all of which went to prying open some boxes. |
Lappland does not answer. She reaches out and rummages through the pile of photos. | |
Lappland | Ah, here it is. ...Pfft. |
She runs her fingers over the photo and lets out an unpleasant chortle. | |
Lappland | Look at that itty bitty face of yours, so cute and innocent. What was going through your little noggin back then? |
3-2 | |
---|---|
The smoke from the burning photo flushes out a gray-and-white striped musbeast from the grass. | |
Lappland | Oh, there's another little fella here. |
Lappland lifts it by the back of its neck and looks at the panicked beastling with its feet dangling in the air. | |
Lappland | Haha, you scared? How about that feeling of being airborne? Getting carried around by the scruff of your neck, losing control of your body. Nobody likes that, right? |
As if to prove her words, the musbeast opens its mouth to try to bite Lappland's finger. | |
Lappland | Yes, yes! Just like that! All you can do is fight back, right? |
She lets the musbeast rest in the palm of her hand. | |
Lappland | Did you know, I once kept a buddy who looked just like you. I got it the cutest little cage, the finest food, and even fluffy sawdust to nap on. I would even dress it up nice and pretty. But... |
The musbeast cannot understand human language. It simply sniffs around Lappland's hand. | |
Lappland | The more I look at you, the more I see the resemblance. How about you come home with me then? |
She throws the rest of the photos into the fire, the tongues of flame rolling over the already-blurred faces. |

The place can hardly be called a hideout. It's nothing but a random shack where Lappland occasionally meets Capone and Gambino. Today, she comes by only to give the musbeast food and water. But she doesn't even need to open the door to know what's going on inside. A strong burning odor rushes into her nostrils. Only the door remains in its original form. | |
Lappland | ...... |
Mafioso | Somebody's coming! Let's get outta here! |
She kicks open the door. The inside is choked with thick smoke, and the musbeast cage that had been set in the middle of the table is turned over. She takes a look around, and sees that everything of any utility has been chopped up and set alight. A very familiar way of doing things. She soon walks out, weapons in hand. |
4-3 | |
---|---|
Lappland | Hah, now isn't that something. Everything else burned away, but you're still here. |
She holds an old photograph in her hand. | |

In it is a silver-haired girl about ten years of age, dressed meticulously in Saluzzo attire, a serious and stoic expression chiseled into her face. The girl's eyes are not looking at the camera, but rather at its side– | |
Lappland | Carissimo padre mio.[note 8] |
She presses the photo to her chest, whispering to herself as if in a dream. | |
Lappland | Ever since I was little, as the heir to Famiglia Saluzzo, I was taught how to behave, how to speak, and how to talk to the wise guys to command more authority. At that time, I didn't realize you were more than just my father, you were Don Saluzzo. I thought I would be free if I rebelled against you, but I came to realize you were also controlled by the famiglia. Ah, spiacente.[note 9] Controlled? You wouldn't see it that way. |
She tears the photograph into little pieces, until only her young, naive face remains. She looks into her own eyes. | |
Lappland | Of course you think that's how things should be. That's what a don should be. Of course his daughter is not just his daughter, she's also the future donna[note 10]. Haha, don't I look just like a fragile little fowlbeast forced to lug around sharpened claws? I really did love that gift, father. I cherished it more than words can express. |
She tosses the shreds of paper into the pit like confetti. A small, charred musbeast is already lying in there. | |
Lappland | And in the end, you still died, this still won't burn, and I still have no hope of escape. I cherished you so much. But, you died at the hands of carissimo padre mio, yet again. |
Those eyes seem to peer up at her from within the flames. | |
Lappland | ...Ahaha! |

---|---|
After leaving Grey Hall, Lappland would not be seen again. Just as she is about to leave Volsinii, she remembers some unfinished business. And so, she turns back once more. | |
Lappland | ...I just can't bear to part with you guys, huh? |
Gambino waves his hand, and turns to leave without saying anything. Capone stands there motionless, and after a long time, finally takes a step forward. | |
Lappland | You're still playin' around, holding a knife at my neck like that? |
Capone | What're you doin' here? I thought you left. |
Lappland | Gambino's gone? |
Capone | Yeah. Said he was gonna work his way up some famiglia. Before you say anything... lemme tell you this. |
Capone looks at the woman in front of him vacantly, unsure of what might happen to him when he finishes his words. | |
Capone | Just like you said, I ain't gonna find no answers from you, no way forward. I'm leavin' too. |
Lappland | Oh. |
Capone | ..."Oh?" That's it? |
Lappland | Addio,[note 11] Capone. |
5-2 | |
---|---|
Capone is a little nervous. He does not know what Lappland plans to do. Based on his past experiences, he assumes that he might fall to a single swing of her sword, or he might suffer some ridicule or anger from the woman in front of him. But today, she simply strides forward with brisk steps, heading in the direction of the new city, step by step. He starts to envy Gambino, who left one step sooner. | |
Capone | Where are you going? |
Lappland | I'll see you off. |
Capone | ...... I'm not following you anymore. Lappland, Gambino and me decided we got nothin' to do with you no more. You keep goin' your own way. I got other places to be. |
Lappland | ...Okay. I didn't say anything, did I? |
Capone grips the knife hidden in his sleeves. | |
Lappland | I just came to give you my blessing– You're running away too. I guess I could say you're rebelling. Rebelling against me. Even if you decide to keep getting pushed around in the streets of Siracusa, well, that's not so bad, is it? So put the knife away. I just came to say goodbye. |
Capone | ...... |
He continues to clutch the blade in his hand. | |
Lappland | Still don't get it, little buddy? I'm not here to laugh at what you're doing, and I'm not angry at all. You're just following your path. Arrivederci. |
Capone remains silent for a long time. Finally, he turns and leaves. Lappland turns once more, walking in the opposite direction of Volsinii–toward the wildness. A black mist condenses behind her. |
