The Preservers, alternatively Preservators, are advanced A.I. in the world of Arknights.

Background

The activated Preserver in the halls of Sarcophagi

The Preservers are created by the "First Civilization" through the Preserver Project at some point after the "disaster from above" that results in the Civilization's near-total annihilation. They are meant to act as overseers of the Sarcophagi where the Civilization's survivors are kept in stasis until they could be awakened when the situation stabilizes in the distant future so they could restore their civilization.[1]

Due to concerns that the Observers would take over the Preservers if they are fully synthetic, it was decided that the A.I. would utilize the digitally uploaded consciousness of a First Civilization member, thus making them an "organic A.I."[2] A man by the name Trevor Friston volunteered to have his consciousness uploaded into a Preserver body, becoming the first and only known Preserver who oversees the Sarcophagi complex later dubbed "Hall of Stasis" beneath the present-day Trimounts, Columbia.

For the next 13,000 years, Friston broadcasted signals to outer space in hopes that it would reach out to the First Civilization members in other planets. However, he receives no response and the slumbering Civilization survivors' vital signs start to fade, leading to Friston realizing that the Project was doomed.[3] At some point before the events of Lone Trail, Friston meets Kristen Wright as she discovered the Hall of Stasis and, after hearing her wish to bring a better future to Terra,[4] decides to aid Kristen in breaking through the Starpod by sharing all the details he knew about it and allowing her to use the Sarcophagi as a power source for the S.H.A.F.T..

After a fateful meeting with two other survivors from the First Civilization era, the Doctor and Kal'tsit, and Kristen having succeeded in going through the Starpod – at the cost of consuming all power from the Sarcophagi which prevents the slumbering Civilization survivors from ever being awoken, Friston had his memories purged by Kal'tsit so he could be "reborn" in the new Terra, putting a close to the Preserver Project.
