Civilight Eterna, alternatively known as the Black Crown due to its shape, is the nickname of DWDB-221E, an apparatus created by the Predecessors to record their history and ensure the mistakes of the past are never repeated.[1] Although originally intended for communal use and critique, Trevor Friston interprets the Black Crown’s appearance as a bad omen—its monarchic symbolism, reminiscent of outdated feudal systems, may hinder the progress of future generations. He would have preferred to use its power to establish a collective consciousness capable of reshaping all lifeforms.[2]

Following the downfall of the Predecessors, the Black Crown inexplicably came into the possession of the Teekaz race, where it became the symbol of the Kings of Sarkaz. Rather than adhering to a hereditary line of succession, the Crown selects its bearer at random from among the Sarkaz—regardless of royal lineage—as seen with its former wielder, Theresa.[3]

Before her death at the hands of the Doctor during the climax of Theresis' siege of Babel, Theresa entrusted Civilight Eterna to Amiya, making her the only King of Sarkaz who is not a Sarkaz herself, being a Cautus/Chimera. Her claim is not accepted by her opponents—particularly the Revenants—who derisively refer to her as the Outblood King, believing her unworthy of the Crown's power.[4] Nonetheless, Amiya wields the power of Civilight Eterna when necessary, although its strength is restricted by the ten rings she wears—limiters that prevent the Crown's overwhelming memories and knowledge from consuming her, as it did previous kings.[5][6]
