A special tutorial operation of A Walk in the Dust, WD-TR-1, titled Air Support Training, gives an insight on Air Support drones and how to counter them.
At first Melantha will be automatically deployed on D6 facing left after a Tactical Crossbowman spawns from G3. Note that the Tactical Crossbowman "marks" Melantha by a red crosshair as soon as she is within range, and shortly afterward a Scrap spawns from the Mobile Tactical Hangar in B3. Dobermann then explains that certain mercenaries are able to summon Air Support drones that assist them offensively or defensively which will only start to support the enemy once they reached the marked target and are harmless otherwise.
Ansel is then deployed on E8 facing left and starts healing Melantha as she attacks the Tactical Crossbowman and the Scrap arrives at her position. Note that the Scrap fire twin grenade launchers that deals splash damage and temporarily halves the victims' DEF; Melantha noticeably takes more damage from the Crossbowman and two Tactical Hounds that spawn after the Crossbowman is killed, but thanks to Ansel's support, she managed to kill them all. At this point the Scrap is suddenly destroyed on its own; Dobermann then points out that Air Support drones will only loiter at the marked target and never head for the Protection Objective, and due to logistical problems posed by the mercs, will self-destruct sometime after they are active, though they are also more difficult to be targeted by friendly units.
The second and last Tactical Crossbowman then spawns from G3 and, as before, calls in a second Scrap on Melantha. This time Jessica is available for deployment; deploy her on either C9 or E9 facing left to have her shoot down the Scrap and lowering the pressure received by Melantha especially from the last three Tactical Hounds that spawns after the Crossbowman dies.
