The final operation in the "main" part of Episode 08, M8-8, titled Awakening, a Dream's End, pits the player against the transformed Mephisto and a horde of Possessed enemies in the Chernobog sarcophagus, accompanied by a sad music which perfectly illustrates the pain Mephisto had been through when he enters his "hibernation" state upon taking too much damage.
Who can truly choose their own life?
If the player clears M8-8 without defeating Mephisto — by letting him into a Protection Objective, the third of Episode 08's secret interludes, EG-3, will be unlocked.
