- Ursus is a parallel to Russia, shown by its use of Slavic words as both personal and place names, by Russia's common personification as a bear, and by its national emblem based on the double-headed eagle.
- Ursus' politics is roughly modelled after both the Russian Empire during the late 19th to early 20th centuries and, to a lesser degree, the Soviet Union during Stalin's era.
- The Bloodpeak Campaign is obviously based on the Russo-Japanese War with its devastating aftermath bringing down its hegemony.
- The reformist Emperor is similar to Tzar Alexander II who started to modernize Russia in the aftermath of the war, only to face opposition from the conservatives-reactionaries and eventually his assassination.
- Ursus' pogroms toward the Infected is likely a reference to the White Terror and, to a lesser degree, the Great Purge.
- The Originium mining camps are a reference to the katorga system of the Russian Empire era which, coincidentally, was the basis of the gulag system.
- Many Ursine places are also based on their real-life counterparts in Russia:
- Deity Grypherburg, the capital of Ursus, is obviously a parallel to Saint Petersburg, the capital of the Russian Empire.
- The current ruling family of Ursus, the Ivanovich dynasty, is likely based on the Rurik dynasty.
- The rule of the Hippogryphs and the war against the Nightzmoras are likely analogues to the Golden Horde.
