  • The underground world of Durin is obviously the Terran analogue of Khazad-dûm or the Lonely Mountain in J. R. R. Tolkien's literature, notably the Lord of the Rings.
  • The currently known Durish cities are named in Basque, which likely alludes to the Mikolasak in Basque mythology.
    • The Basque language is notable for being the only language isolate (has no relation to any other languages, like how French and Italian are derived from Latin) in Europe and has many words and phrases that describe nature, which fits well to the Durins' strong autonomy in their city-states and their rural-like lifestyle.
  • The idealistic governmental system practiced among the Durish cities is inspired by the one described in Plato's Republic.
