Umberto de Montano is an NPC in Arknights. He is a supporting character in I Portatori dei Velluti.

Background[edit]

Many years ago, Umberto used to work as a tagliatore for Famiglia Venezia, a title earned by his skills as a tailor and an assassin. It was said that whoever ended up on his order sheet would perish by the next day. His infamy terrified the famiglie of Montelupe, solved many problems for the Venezias and earned him the respect of Don Fabrizio, who previously saved his life when he was a young tailor, granting him the chance to live in Montelupe.[1] As the owner of the shop Tailor de Montano, Umberto was highly regarded as a tailor and his suits were praised as high quality.

Umberto, whose wife recently passed away, was sought out by the Signore dei Lupi Vargo and chosen as his Fang, in return for a single condition: that he would raise his son Luca to maturity before delivering his victory. He turned away from the killings, focused on his work as a tailor and a father, and was even planning to hand the tailor shop to Luca, who already earned his reputation thanks to his perseverance; however, Luca later died tragically to the mafiosi, leaving behind a 3-year-old child named Luchino.[1]. Umberto felt devastated by his son's death and saw this as a punishment for his past crimes, so he changed the deal with Vargo, that he would raise his grandson to maturity instead, which enrages Vargo, who realized he had been duped. As the child grows up, Umberto continued to teach Luchino to become a tailor, believing him to be a prodigy, while hiding the past from him.[2]

Story[edit]

I Portatori dei Velluti[edit]

Umberto was hired by Lappland to make a suit for the Carnevale. He sent Luchino to deliver it to her. He then meets Ingrid, who was contacted by Vargo to act as his bodyguard. He does not seem to particularly care about il Signori's game, but warns Ingrid that leaving Siracusa is not as easy as coming back.

Upon hearing about Luchino being kidnapped by the Venezias while delivering the order, he rushed to the Venezia estate with Ingrid, begging for the Don's mercy. There he revealed his past to Luchino, about his work as an assassin and the death of Luchino's father. Despite Antonio's discontent, the Don gave Umberto the permission to take his grandson home, and the two swiftly leaves under Ingrid's cover.

At the day of the Carnevale, he declined the protection of Ingrid, stating that he's already close to death and only desires a quiet night. When Projekt Red arrived with the intent to kill him, he had no will to fight, instead inviting her to a friendly chat while he finished his last order. He expressed his final regrets, while admitting that he was fortunate to be able to do the work he loved on his deathbed. Umberto de Montano slumbered peacefully on his sofa, never to wake up again.
