Cuna de Nene
- Captain Isidro
- Juana (formerly)
- Calixto de la Cruz☠ (formerly)
The "Cuna de Nene" is an organization in the world of Arknights and the deuteragonists of Exodus from the Pale Sea. Based on the eponymous ship, they are a band of Iberian pirates who sail the salt flats, hoping to one day return to the sea.
Background[edit]
The crew of the Cuna de Nene are the next generation of a pirate band that traversed the coasts during Iberia's Golden Age. While their fleet was small under the lead of Captain Calixto de la Cruz, they were able to seize a corvette of the Iberian Defensa, La Conquista, which became their flagship and main base of operations. Because the art of shipbuilding in Iberia has been lost to time and the Inquisition forbids any excavation of relics from the Golden Age, La Conquista is currently the only known well-preserved relic from before the Profound Silence.[1][2] On December 7th, 1035, the crew suffered a heavy blow when their alchemist was killed by the Iberian Defensa. Juana, the first mate, proposed sailing south to search for a new alchemist in the remote city of Orvieto, a suggestion which Cruz ultimately rejected.[1]
When the Seaborn began to appear after the Profound Silence and the sea began to retreat, Cruz ordered his men to help the townspeople of Aarón—defending the town from the attacking Seaborn. In an act of heroism, Cruz used himself as bait to lure a particularly dangerous and evolved Seaborn into a cave, entrusting the fleet to Juana before sealing himself and the Seaborn inside.[3] After returning to La Conquista, Juana took control of the crew in order to preserve Cruz' legacy, and they adapted to life sailing the salt flats. Those who refused to follow her eventually abandoned the fleet, but most were caught and killed by the Inquisition, who were aggressively hunting down the few pirates who remain. The remaining crew, however, had divisive opinions on Juana's approach. Rumors began to circulate amongst the crew, accusing Juana of making a deal with the Seaborn and betraying her men in exchange for power and longevity — attributed to her fearsome fighting prowess and long lifespan.[4] The pirate crew later incorporated wooden saltships into their fleet, given that ordinary landships were too heavy to sail the treacherous salt flats, sinking in the salt due to their weight. La Conquista, on the other hand, was kept and successfully modified to traverse the salt flats reliably, albeit slower than purpose-built saltships. Juana also installed a bionic transmission system that she designed after saltfin biology.[5]
Juana's true intent was to return to the ocean one day, even if her crew disagrees—the new crew are too young to know of the sea, and only know life on the salt. This tense uneasiness would snap when Rose Salt brought an old compass that she stole from the Inquisition, unaware that it was created with Corazonix, an alchemical product that would respond to an Alchemist's desire.[6]

Other notable members[edit]
- Calixto de la Cruz☠: Close friend to Juana and captain of the fleet in the height of their glory. During the Seaborn attack on Aarón, he willingly baited a dangerous Seaborn specimen and sealed himself and the foe within a cave. Because of this, he was eventually killed and assimilated by his opponent. Eventually, Thorns bested his killer in a duel-reclaiming Cruz's sword and returning it to Juana.
- Teach: A hardy fighter and steadfast supporter of Juana as well as the daughter of a sailor from Juana's original crew, also known as "Perlita"[note 3].
- Rus: One of the crewmates who is opposed to Juana's plan and distrusts her, which lead to an attempted mutiny. He stayed behind in Aarón.
- "Nene": Juana's pet saltfin, rescued by her after being abandoned by other saltfins due to Nene's stunted growth. Highly intelligent to an uncanny degree and boasting sharp senses, Nene helped Juana's crew search for relics beneath the salt, and eventually named the Cuna de Nene through drawn lots.[7]
- Nene's appearance is based on the Sacabambaspis, an extinct genus of fish from the Ordovician period, and its overall design is based on a popular meme on the Internet regarding said fish.

Trivia[edit]
- The saltships of the Cuna de Nene share many similarities with the Strandbeest built by the Dutch artist Theo Jansen.
